February is about hope, symbolized by looking up at the big blue skies and first buds of the otherwise naked trees. It is the same with new work. Earlier this week, thanks to Hidden Theatre, I heard my new monologue for the first time. A truly exceptional actress, called Rachel Coulton, did a cold reading. Rachel transformed herself into a very convincing ‘voiceless’ worm, and I felt delighted that my somewhat unconventional script flowed off the page.
One of the constructive elements of hearing the piece, and having a small critical audience, was I could focus on what to improve. It is about putting yourself out there and being brave, I suppose. Admittedly, this is far easier said, than done. If you are willing to take constructive criticism, and value the positive comments, then a cold reading is a significant investment in your work.
